Day 2

A Thrilling Excursion to Rila Monastery & Boyana Church

  • Breakfast

Begin your day with a delightful breakfast at your hotel before heading to the meeting point for your "Rila Monastery & Boyana Church" sightseeing tour. The tour commences from the parking area behind Alexander Nevski Cathedral. Please ensure that you arrange your transportation to the meeting point and arrive there quite early.

Rila Monastery is an absolute must-visit attraction while you are in Bulgaria. The monastery's arcaded balconies and remarkable frescoes created by one of the most renowned Bulgarian Revival Period painters, the gilded iconostasis, and the breathtaking mountain vistas – the combination of these elements makes the monastery visit an extraordinary and unforgettable experience.

You will have approximately an hour of free time at Rila Monastery, allowing you to explore this highly-visited UNESCO site. You can enter the main church and the narthex's gallery, marvel at the exhibits in the Monastery's History Museum, savor the delicious "mekitsi" (Bulgarian doughnuts) served with delectable buffalo's yogurt, a local specialty, or take a short stroll in the surroundings.

Afterward, return to Sofia, where the next UNESCO Monument awaits you. The Boyana Church is renowned for its frescoes, which ushered in an epochal change in mural painting and are considered precursors to the European Renaissance. Over 240 figures depicted in the church's frescoes exhibit individuality, vitality, and profound psychological depth.

Conclude your day in Sofia with an overnight stay, having explored the cultural treasures of Rila Monastery and Boyana Church, both recognized by UNESCO for their significance in Bulgaria's heritage.
